PREVENT Strategy

Safeguarding is our highest priority. As part of our commitment to keeping children safe, we support the Government's PREVENT strategy, which aims to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism, radicalisation and extremism.

We recognise that protecting children from radicalisation is similar to protecting them from other forms of harm and is therefore an important part of our safeguarding responsibilities.

What is Radicalisation?

Radicalisation is the process by which a person may come to support extremist views or beliefs. Extremism can take many forms and may involve views that seek to undermine fundamental British Values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.

How We Promote PREVENT

We promote the PREVENT strategy by:

  • Promoting British Values throughout the curriculum.
  • Teaching online safety.
  • Encouraging critical thinking and respectful discussion.
  • Supporting pupils' emotional wellbeing and sense of belonging.
  • Delivering age-appropriate RSHE education.
  • Providing safeguarding training for staff.
  • Maintaining clear safeguarding and reporting procedures.
British Values and the 4Rs

Our approach to PREVENT is rooted in our school values and the 4Rs: Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Reflection. Through these values, we teach children to respect others, make responsible choices, think critically, reflect on different viewpoints and develop the confidence to speak to trusted adults if they have concerns.

Working with Families

We work closely with parents, carers and external agencies to ensure that all children feel safe, valued and included. We encourage families to speak with the school if they have any concerns about their child's wellbeing or online activity.

County Lines Guidance for Parents and Pupils

Suffolk children are considered to be in direct danger by 'County Lines' due to the close links to London and other cities. If you are concerned about a child or want to know more follow the link to the local County Lines Team. At Britannia, we discuss issues linked to County Lines through an age-appropriate and progressive RSHE curriculum. We also have close links to our PCSO who regularly visits the school and works with pupils. All staff are trained to know what County Lines is, how to look out for signs that children are involved in a County Lines Gang and what action to take.
