BRITISH VALUES AT BRITANNIA

At Britannia, we recognise and celebrate the rich diversity of modern Britain and the multicultural and multi-faith community in which we live. We understand the important role schools play in preparing children to become responsible, respectful and active citizens who contribute positively to society.

We are an inclusive school and welcome all pupils who are entitled to education under British law, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, beliefs, disability or socio-economic background. Through our curriculum, ethos and daily practice, we actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Democracy

At Britannia, our pupils are provided with meaningful opportunities to participate in democratic processes and have their voices heard. Children take part in elections to select School Council representatives, learning first-hand about the principles of voting, representation and decision-making.

The School Council operates democratically under the guidance of our Principal, Mr Hart, and regularly communicates its work and achievements to the wider school community. We also maintain links with our local Member of Parliament, who has visited the school to speak with pupils about the importance of democracy and civic responsibility, helping them to understand how democratic processes influence everyday life.

The Rule of Law

We help pupils develop an understanding of the importance of rules and laws in creating safe, fair and respectful communities. Our strong partnerships with local services, including the police, provide pupils with positive role models and opportunities to learn about the role these services play in society.

The school also works closely with the Local Authority and a range of professional agencies to support children and families when needed. These partnerships include links with the Fire and Rescue Service, health professionals and other community services.

Our positive Behaviour Policy clearly outlines expectations and responsibilities for all members of the school community and is underpinned by our valued behaviours, the 4Rs: Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Reflection. Pupils are encouraged to understand the reasons behind rules and the consequences of their actions, helping them to develop self-discipline and make positive choices. Through the consistent promotion of the 4Rs, children learn the importance of respecting others, taking responsibility for their actions, demonstrating resilience when faced with challenges and being reflective about the impact of the way they behave upon themselves and others around them. Behaviour incidents are regularly reviewed and monitored, and assemblies reinforce the importance of laws, rules, rights and responsibilities within our school, the local community and the wider world.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect is a fundamental aspect of our school culture and underpins all relationships within our community. Through our Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum, pupils develop an understanding of positive relationships, empathy, equality and responsible citizenship.

Staff consistently promote fairness, inclusion and respect, encouraging pupils to value the views, experiences and contributions of others. Our Friendship Monitor programme further supports the development of respectful relationships across year groups, helping pupils to work, play and learn together harmoniously.

Individual Liberty

We actively encourage pupils to develop independence, self-confidence and a sense of responsibility. Children are given opportunities to take on leadership and monitoring roles appropriate to their age and stage of development, enabling them to make positive contributions to school life.

Within our safe and supportive environment, pupils are encouraged to make informed choices and understand their rights and responsibilities. Through a broad range of extra-curricular activities and enrichment opportunities, children are able to pursue their interests, develop new skills and make choices that support their personal growth and well-being.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Britannia promotes understanding, respect and tolerance for people of all faiths, beliefs and backgrounds. Through our curriculum, assemblies, celebrations and wider learning opportunities, pupils develop an appreciation of the diverse cultures and communities that make up modern Britain.

We encourage children to explore and discuss different beliefs in an open, respectful and age-appropriate way. By fostering curiosity, empathy and understanding, we help pupils develop the knowledge and attitudes required to thrive in our diverse and inclusive society.
