Year 1 Phonics Screening

What is the Phonics Screening check?

The phonics screening check is an informal test that children will need to complete at the end of year 1. The test is designed to test their ability to decode words using their phonics knowledge and children will be required to read a mixture of 40 real and pseudo words (we call these alien words).

When will my child complete the phonics screening check?

All schools across the country will complete the phonics screening check in June.

How will my child undertake the phonics screening check?

They will complete the check on a 1:1 basis with their class teacher.

What are alien words?

Alien words are words that are not real and are designed purely to test the children on their ability to identify the sounds they have been taught.

What happens if my child does not pass the phonics screening check?

All children progress at different rates, and therefore not all children will pass the check in June. If this is the case, your child will retake the check in June when they are in Year 2.

How can I help my child in preparation for the phonics screening check?

Your child will be receiving lots of support at school from their class teacher in order to prepare them for the phonics screening check. Your child's class teacher may provide you with additional resources to complete at home to prepare them for the check.

There are online games you can play with your child to prepare them for the phonics screening:
